The commentary explains: "This cognition of initial awakening" is the cognition of entering the stage. Awakening means awakening-illumination, which is the real cognition that realizes [suchness]. "Neither suchness nor cognition" is because object and cognition are both empty. "Neither existent nor non-existent" is because existence and non-existence are both quiescent. "Without two characteristics" is because subject and object are both obliterated. That is to say, the sixth and seventh consciousnesses become [the cognitions of] profound observation and equality, these two categories of cognition initially arising. Hereafter, the second part explains skill-in-means cognition.
