The commentary explains: Regarding "gathering all merits": this means amassing the merits of immeasurable practices and vows. As stated in fascicle seven of the Daśabhūmika-śāstra: "Cultivating the bodhicitta, because of obtaining the power of great vows; an untiring mind, because of not abandoning sentient beings with loving-kindness and compassion; obtaining the power of wholesome roots, because of cultivating the practice of merit and wisdom; the power of not abandoning sentient beings, because of not resting from all practices; the power of correct cultivation, because of giving rise to skillful means; the power of insatiability, because of clearly perceiving the progressively higher bhūmis; obtaining the power superior to others, because of receiving the direct protection of the Tathāgatas; and obtaining superior power oneself, because of obtaining mindfulness, samādhi, and wisdom." Now, among these eight there are four pairs in total: the first two concern the two benefits, and the latter two concern self and other, extensively clarifying the gathering of all virtues on this bhūmi. Regarding "fully contemplating all truths": this indicates the objects contemplated. Regarding "these truths of suffering... contemplating immeasurable [truths]": because the four truths and two truths fully encompass the immeasurable real and conventional objects, the cognition that realizes them understands immeasurably. From here onward is the second [part], explaining the mastery of technical arts. The text is further divided into two: first is the mastery of technical arts.
