Explanation: The Sanskrit says "namo"; here it is translated as "taking refuge with one's life". The Sanskrit says "ratna"; here it is translated as "jewel". The Sanskrit says "trayāya"; here it is translated as "three". There it says "taking refuge with life in the jewel three"; here it says "taking refuge in the Three Jewels". It means that because those who uphold the sūtra and recite the dhāraṇī recite the esoteric words, they declare taking refuge in the Three Jewels; why need one take refuge? From here below, I respectfully rely on the Sanskrit palm-leaves of the Tripiṭaka Master's Sarvatathāgatatattvasaṃgraha Sūtra to provide a parallel translation and explanation. As that sūtra says: taking refuge in the Buddha, one immediately receives the empowering protection of all buddhas, the five bodhisattvas, all bodhisattvas, and their retinues, who all come to give protection. This means that all bodhisattvas venerate the bodhicitta; seeing those who produce the bodhicitta and take refuge in the Buddha, they constantly protect them. Taking refuge in the Dharma, one immediately receives the empowering protection of Śakra together with his retinue, the Four Heavenly Kings, and others, who all come to give protection. This means that because Śakra in the past obtained benefit through the protection of the prajñā teachings during times of crisis and danger, he constantly venerates it. Taking refuge in the Saṅgha, one immediately receives the empowering protection of the Akaniṣṭha heaven, the five Pure Abodes, and others together with their retinues, who all come to give protection. This means that all bodhisattvas and the Śrāvaka Saṅgha abide in that heaven dwelling in the bliss of the present Dharma, and they constantly venerate them. From here, the second [part] separately explains the three refuges. Within this it divides into two: first, explaining taking refuge in the Buddha Jewel.
