Explanation: The syllable "a" is pronounced in the falling tone; here it is translated as "non-". In the Sanskrit text it is written as this syllable "a"; to follow phonetic convenience it is pronounced as the syllable "e", and the syllable "e" above in the sūtra is just this syllable "a". "Kṣaya"; here it is translated as "exhaustion". "Kośe"; here it is translated as "treasury"; that is, the preceding lamp of cognition is the inexhaustible treasury. The Yoga commentary says: "The syllable 'a' is the seed-syllable. A seed-syllable has two meanings: first, to bring forth; second, to contain and uphold." This will be explained in full below. The syllable "a" expresses the meaning that all phenomena are fundamentally non-arisen. This syllable "a" is the mother of all syllables, capable of producing all syllables. If one attains yoga correspondence with the syllable "a" gate, one then attains the inexhaustible Dharma treasury of all buddhas, and realizes that all phenomena are fundamentally non-arisen, like empty space with one single characteristic, pure, equal, and non-dual; this is the fundamental nirvikalpa-jñāna. From here, the second [part] explains the phrase on attaining the subsequent [cognition].
