The commentary explains: This explains benefiting others. As it is said below: 'The copper wheel of the acquired lineage transforms two continents.' The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'A bodhisattva in this abode encourages the study of ten dharmas: namely, diligently making offerings to buddhas; delighting in abiding in saṃsāra; guiding the world to eliminate evil karma; constantly giving instruction with the sublime Dharma; praising the supreme Dharma and learning the merits of buddhas; being born before buddhas and always receiving their acceptance; skillfully expounding tranquil samādhi; praising departure from the cycle of birth and death; and serving as a refuge for suffering sentient beings.' The third, 'guiding the world', is this wheel-turning king. The tenth, 'serving as a refuge for suffering beings', is attaining buddhahood through the eight phases. Therefore, this sūtra's statement 'transforms sentient beings' refers to the mundane and supramundane transformation in the Avataṃsaka. Mentioning the first subsumes the latter; the ten abodes should be understood accordingly. If so, why is it called transforming 'in a small degree'? Answer: Compared to the preceding ten goods, it can be called vast; compared to the subsequent stages, it is said to be 'in a small degree'. Next is the fourth [section], surpassing the grounds of the two vehicles.
