The commentary explains: 'The lion among humans' means that when a lion roars, the hundred beasts crouch and hide; when the Tathāgata expounds, all obstacles vanish like clouds, hence the analogy. 'Expounds for them' praises the five kṣāntis. 'Profoundly deep, etc.' means: the two vehicles cannot fathom it, hence it is called 'profoundly deep'; it is difficult to hear across vast kalpas, hence it is 'unprecedented'. 'Lands numerous as grains of sand, etc.' means: through the mighty power of the Dharma, upon hearing what has never been heard before, lands numerous as grains of sand all tremble and shake. 'The great assembly, etc.' means: the great assembly, upon hearing the Dharma, understands and rejoices; whether ordinary beings or noble ones, all receive benefit. Being endowed with these manifold virtues, his deep compassion is therefore praised. Among the three manners of showing the path, this one is specifically praised here because the subsequent admonition and guidance bring vast benefit and joy. From here, the third section concludes the praise with reverent homage.
