Commentary: This explains that within the various states the spirits are immeasurable, each having a retinue, and upon hearing the sūtra they protect the state. This sūtra's text is general, without specific names. As stated in the eighth [fascicle] of the Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra: "The great yakṣa general Saṃjñeya, together with the various yakṣa spirits of the twenty-eight divisions, addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honored One! In the present age and in future ages, wherever [this sūtra] is propagated and disseminated, whether in cities, towns, villages, mountains, marshes, or empty forests, or in royal palaces, or in the dwellings of monks, I and the various spirits will all go to that place, each concealing our forms, and everywhere protect that Dharma-expounding master, causing him to be free from decline and distress and constantly receive peace and joy.'" Down to where it says: "'His speech will be clear and articulate, fully adorned; we will also cause vital energy to enter through his pores, his physical strength will be abundant, his imposing radiance brave and vigorous, and he will attain the accomplishment of the light of inconceivable wisdom. And as for listeners of the Dharma, whether men or women, who receive, uphold, and make offerings, I will gather and protect them so that they are free from calamities and untimely misfortunes, and down to constantly encountering the buddhas and quickly realizing anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi.'" It is fully as explained there. From here, the second part explains death and destruction. In this there are two; first, the primary part explains death and destruction.
