Question: If so, when the Vibhāṣā speaks of the Bodhisattva Śākya[muni] transcending nine kalpas and so forth, what kalpas are these? Answer: The Yogācāra next states: "If one correctly cultivates the most supreme grade of courageous vigor, one may be able to alter many intermediate kalpas and kalpas of the three minor calamities, or even alter many great kalpas and the three major calamities; one should know that definitely none can alter an innumerable great kalpa." This accords with the Vibhāṣā's altering of great kalpas during the cultivation of the wondrous marks. If so, since the time is so vast and distant, by what means does one achieve buddhahood? We answer: While dreaming, one considers it to be many years, but upon waking it is merely an instant. Therefore, though the time is immeasurable, awakening is in a single kṣaṇa. One should constantly be diligent oneself and harbor no fear; hence one should speak of the three minds of refinement. From here, the second part clarifies the nature lineage. Within this, there are three parts: first, marking the stage and distinguishing its characteristics; second, properly distinguishing cultivation; third, concluding and explaining the fulfilled stage. First is marking the stage and distinguishing its characteristics.
