"Bodhisattva" is an abbreviation of bodhisattva: bodhi is prajñā, and sattva means skillful means; these two can bring about all benefit and bliss for sentient beings. Furthermore, bodhi means awakening, the fruit sought by wisdom. Sattva means sentient being, the beings delivered by compassion. Relying on words of great vows, he is called a bodhisattva. Furthermore, sattva means courageous: seeking great bodhi with diligent vigor and courage, he is called a bodhisattva. Furthermore, a practitioner is called a sattva; a sentient being who seeks sambodhi is called a bodhisattva. There are those who possess both compassion and wisdom, universally practicing loving-kindness and compassion, glorifying pure lands, and descending to rescue defiled realms; because their capacity and responsiveness harmonize, he alone is indicated here. Or, all who dwell in superior stations, possessing the great mind and accomplishing marvelous wisdom, are Avalokiteśvara; or this points to and instructs them to look upon, so it is said "observe" (guan), and does not refer to one who dwells in the Western realm and comes to travel here. In that Great Sūtra, this is not specifically revealed.
