First, one gives rise to the roots of faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, eliminating and subduing obscuring defilements. Next, one makes great vows, always meeting virtuous friends as superior conditions: though meeting evil friends who use contrivances to subvert and ruin [one], one never abandons the great mind of bodhi; the wholesome dharmas one cultivates grow from stage to stage; and through not falling back or yielding, one rouses and inspires oneself. Up to this point, it is called the initial cultivation of practice. Having first aroused the mind according to what has been explained above, one is immediately called entering toward unsurpassable bodhi, being numbered among the bodhisattvas of the Mahāyāna, setting a boundary to the ocean of birth and death, and being valiantly bound to swiftly ascend to the other shore.
