Next, one should cultivate vows. First, making one general vow that encompasses all vows: namely, embracing the true Dharma. Furthermore, there are three vows: first, in life after life to obtain wisdom in the true Dharma; second, to explain it to sentient beings with an untiring mind; third, to relinquish body, life, and wealth to protect and uphold the true Dharma. Furthermore, there are four vows: first, that those who have not yet parted from suffering may quickly part from it; second, that those who have not yet attained pleasure may swiftly attain it; third, that those who have not yet resolved to cut off evil and cultivate good may resolve to cut off evil and cultivate good; fourth, that those who have not yet attained Buddhahood may early attain Buddhahood. Furthermore, there are five vows: first, generating the mind [of bodhi], initially vowing to attain unsurpassable bodhi; second, the vow regarding rebirth, vowing to be born in good destinies to accord with and benefit [beings]; third, the vow regarding practice, vowing to correctly reflect and cultivate all wholesome karmas; fourth, correct vows, vowing to encompass all bodhisattva virtues, whether general or specific; fifth, great vows, which are of ten kinds: vowing to obtain supreme and wonderful offering articles to make offerings to all Buddhas; vowing to protect the true Dharma so that its transmission continues without interruption; vowing to manifest emanations in the eight phases just like all Buddhas; vowing to practice all the correct practices of bodhisattvas; vowing to universally mature all sentient beings; vowing to be able to manifest in all worlds; vowing to be able to purify all Buddha lands; vowing that all bodhisattvas will advance together toward the Mahāyāna; vowing that all cultivated practices will not be in vain; vowing to swiftly realize unsurpassable bodhi. In order to make the fruits of cultivation vast, in cultivating each and every practice, one makes these vows.
