In Sanskrit it is called 'Śāri', which in Chinese means 'spring thrush' (a bird); from his mother's eloquence, an illustrative metaphor was taken as her appellation, and because he was born of her, he is further called 'putra' ('son'). The mother was renowned for debating skill, and the son took this designation; he established the orthodox and crushed the heterodox, hearing little yet understanding much. Formerly, he was the very first to realize and enter the knowledge and vision of the sun [of the Dharma]; now, to expound the emptiness of intrinsic nature, he is addressed by name to receive the teaching. Exclusively expounding the supreme teaching to synthesize phenomena reveals that these principles are all empty; singling out the superior person to address encompasses all suitable capacities, so that everyone in the assembly at that moment was addressed. Although he received the address, he had not yet awakened to emptiness; he was first encouraged to train and temper his mind, and only then would he eliminate the four points.
