The Commentary says: Previously he addressed the emptiness of the substance of phenomena; now he addresses the emptiness of the characteristics of phenomena. 'All these phenomena' points to the previously contrasted phenomena of form, feeling, and the rest. Being previously absent and now existent is called 'production'; being temporarily existent and returning to non-existence is called 'destruction'. Obstructive defilement is called 'defiled'; the reverse of this is called 'purified'. The expansion of marks is called 'increasing'; the reverse of this is called 'decreasing'.
