The merits abandoned, cultivated, and realized in each of these vihāras are not absent in the other vihāras, but are established separately according to their respective full perfection. The adhimukticaryā-vihāra tends toward signless practice; what it performs is narrow, deficient, and indeterminate. The subsequent six vihāras attain signless practice; what they perform is vast, non-deficient, and determinate. The final four vihāras fully realize purity, partake of the fruits of practice, and their deeds are immeasurable. In the adhimukticaryā-vihāra, at the sixth mind of faith and so forth, faith arises without retrogression and one does not sever roots of goodness; at the seventh mind of the ten abidings, one does not regress in one's position and does not become of the two vehicles; reaching the pramuditā-vihāra, one does not regress from what has been realized and never forgets it; reaching the effortless signless vihāra, one does not regress in practice, naturally making progress in all cultivation seeking the wisdom of all modes, extensively performing benefit and joy; therefore, one retains afflictions to assist one's vows in taking birth, and for this reason the characteristics of cutting off afflictions are not spoken of here.
