From here on is the second [section], which brings forward its functions to praise its excellence. Herein there are two: first, an extensive explanation in prose; later, citing verses to conclude in praise. Within the former there are two: first, clarifying benefit for oneself; later, distinguishing benefit for others; this is the first. The word 'dhāraṇī' (mantra) is the name for an esoteric incantation. 'Bright' means wondrous insight, realizing emptiness and severing obscurations. Because it is an essential and wondrous technique, it uses the word dhāraṇī to praise its superior functions: its divine functioning being unfathomable is called 'great transcendent dhāraṇī'; dispelling darkness and eliminating ignorance is called 'great bright dhāraṇī'; transcending the two vehicles is therefore called 'unsurpassed'; surpassing those bodhisattvas and being equal to the Buddha's wisdom, it is therefore repeated as 'unequalled'.
