Now, explaining the four propositions based on the three natures: among the four propositions, the first two propositions indicate the principal correct teaching, and the latter two propositions eliminate doubts from outsiders. "Form is not different from emptiness" indicates that the conventional is not different from the ultimate; "emptiness is not different from form" indicates that the ultimate is not different from the conventional. Next, eliminating doubts from outsiders: an outsider might raise a doubt, 'Is it called not different because they mutually depend on each other? Or is it called not different because they are identical?' Therefore, this statement is made: 'Form is itself emptiness, emptiness is itself form'—it is not called not different because they mutually depend, nor is it called not different because they are identical. Based on this text itself, the Western masters have two explanations.
