Hereunder is the second part: eliminating the dharmas of the six gates on the basis of the preceding characteristic of emptiness. Eliminating the dharmas of the six gates is divided into six: this is the first, the gate of eliminating the five aggregates, meaning that because the emptiness of all dharmas is endowed with the six characteristics, therefore in emptiness there are no dharmas of the five aggregates. The distinction in meaning of the five aggregates has already been explained above. As for the dharmas of the six gates spoken of here, they collectively reveal the common and distinct spheres of the two vehicles. Because the first three merely reveal the nature of dharmas, they are called the common spheres of the three vehicles; based on the preceding nature of dharmas, gates such as conditioned arising are expounded distinctly according to faculties, and therefore the latter three are called the distinct spheres. Thus the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra says that for śrāvakas he expounded the Dharma of the four truths, for pratyekabuddhas he expounded the Dharma of conditioned arising, and for bodhisattvas he expounded the Dharma of the six pāramitās.
