Second, the distinction of expansion and contraction has two aspects: first, discerning expansion and contraction by correlating projecting and producing; second, discerning expansion and contraction by correlating initiating and moistening. Correlating projecting and producing is as explained in that treatise: For what reason are birth and aging-and-death established for what is produced, while the five branches of consciousness and so forth are established separately for what is projected? Because the distinctive characteristics in the causal stage are difficult to know, the five branches are established separately based on the future fruit stage, fully explained as in that treatise. Because the distinctive characteristics in the fruit stage are easy to understand, two branches are established collectively to manifest the three kinds of duḥkha, fully explained as in that treatise. The distinction between initiating and moistening is as explained in that treatise: For what reason is ignorance established collectively for initiating karma, while craving and grasping are established separately in the stage of moistening karma? Although all afflictions are able to initiate and moisten, the power of ignorance is preeminent, fully as in that treatise; and at the stage of initiating karma, the power of ignorance increases because it possesses eleven superior functions—namely, the cognitive object and so forth, as explained at length in the sūtra. At the stage of moistening karma, the power of craving increases specifically, craving being described as like water that can irrigate and moisten, requiring frequent irrigation before the sprout of existence is produced. Tentatively relying on the beginning and the end, craving and grasping are divided into two; since there is no meaning of repeated initiation, a single ignorance is established.
