As for the Commentary on the Heart Sūtra, it was composed in the translation bureau by the Tang National Preceptor Xianshou in response to the request of Duke Zheng. Its phrasing is concise and its purport subtle, so for those who compose subcommentaries it is particularly difficult. Dharma Master Huayin of the Huayan [tradition] uniquely illuminated its hidden imports, towering above conventional discourse; he was constantly pained that previous treatises diverged quite far from the commentary's intent. One day, condescending to the entreaties of the assembly, he thereupon brought forth these new notes, entitled "Linked Pearls". He took the bequeathed instructions of the various patriarchs as his guide, and the maxims of the sūtras and treatises as his model, investigating the deep and obscure to bequeath it to those of the future, causing the torch of wisdom to be mutually kindled—how could his achievement not be magnificent! At the time of the mid-autumn sixteenth day of the yiyou year (1165 CE), Qiandao reign-era of the august Song dynasty. Inscribed by the śramaṇa Huashen.
