Question: "One speaks only when it is time; to speak when it is not the time is called errant speech. Furthermore, this teaching arose in order to cause practitioners to generate the great aspiration, cultivate vast practices, refute non-Buddhists, turn away from the Hīnayāna, sever obstacles, attain the fruit, and benefit sentient beings. On what grounds does the commentary master hastily set forth [the topic] by reference to that source of myriad dharmas and ultimate fruit of wondrous awakening?" Answer: "It is because he wishes to reveal that the cultivation of causes is identical to the awakening on the ground of fruition. Mañjuśrī initially asked about the fundamental cause, while the Utmost Sage first brought up the ultimate fruit. If the nature is not gold or jade, even if carved it will not become a precious vessel. Therefore the sūtra says: 'If one cannot understand one's own mind, how can one know the correct path?'"
