The challenger asks: 'Within the general [preface] there are five prefaces, and their meaning of testifying to faith is identical, so they are called the general preface. Within the specific [preface] there are five prefaces, and in looking toward the principal exposition their meaning is also equal, so they are also general prefaces. Since the two meanings are equal, could the former also be called the specific preface and the latter the general preface?' The explicator says: 'The former five meanings of testimony are identical and have no distinction; the latter, looking toward the principal exposition, has further specific intentions. What are they? The five specifics of this scripture serve as a preface for cause and fruition; the five specifics of the Great Scripture (Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra) serve as a preface for eternal abiding. The intents and directions differ, so the meaning is evident.'
