"The Buddha was dwelling at Rājagṛha": from here down is the fourth, presenting the place where the scripture was preached. This dwelling place precisely serves to verify "have I heard": you say, "Such an entire scripture I heard from the Buddha's side"; if you can accurately recall the place where the scripture was heard, the words "have I heard" can be faithfully accepted; if you do not recall the place where the scripture was heard, how can the words "have I heard" be believed? Therefore, presenting the place where the scripture was heard proves that "have I heard" is not mistaken. Now, regarding this presentation of the place where the scripture was preached, there are naturally two levels: first broad, second narrow. Rājagṛha is the broad. According to the customs of foreign countries, if a country is large, it has a distinct country name; if a country is small, it takes its designation from the city. But the background of the City of Kings has long been known of old and need not be recorded. "On Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain": this is presenting the dwelling place at the second level. Around the City of Kings there are five mountains in all; it is not known on which mountain the Tathāgata was located. Now it specifically clarifies that the Buddha preached the Lotus Sūtra on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain. In foreign languages it is called Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain; here it is translated as Vulture Peak. It is said that on this mountain in ancient times various people took medicine, studied the Way, and became immortals; furthermore, the peak of the mountain resembles a vulture, hence it is called Vulture Peak.
