時眾疑言：「萬二千人中，唯有一萬一千九百九十八人是阿羅漢，阿難與羅睺羅此二人，自是須陀洹學人之類，今何故與無學人同耶？」解言：「此二人雖是學人，然為大眾亦知識，是故類入有名聞中與大大阿羅漢等。」

At that time the assembly doubted, saying: "Among the twelve thousand people, only eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-eight are arhats. Ānanda and Rāhula, these two, naturally belong to the class of stream-enterers who are learners; why are they now grouped together with the non-learners?" The explanation states: "Although these two are learners, they are also known to the great assembly; therefore they are classified among those of renown, on a par with the great, great arhats."
