The questioner asks: "The objective realm illuminated by real wisdom has four unities, so it additionally has the unity of principle; the objective realm illuminated by provisional wisdom that is preached should then have four triads. Why is there no triad of principles now, but only three triads?" The commentator replies: "If there had been three principles in the past, there should truly have been three [vehicles]; how could it be said that 'within the one Buddha vehicle, he expediently preaches three'? Therefore we know that under the former teaching there were no three principles. The sūtra text below says, 'Merely with provisional names does he guide sentient beings.' If one said that under the three teachings there were truly three principles, it should have said 'with real names he guides sentient beings'; why would it say 'merely with provisional names'?"
