Next, the names and meanings of the two knowledges are explained as having shared and distinct [aspects]. Third, expedient knowledge contains the meaning of wisdom, and this expedient knowledge is itself the meaning of real knowledge; real knowledge also contains the meaning of expedient knowledge. How is this known? Wisdom fundamentally takes illuminating reflection as its meaning. If expedient knowledge did not thoroughly illuminate the capacities and natures of the persons of the three vehicles, how could it expound the Dharma to transform beings? Therefore we know that expedient knowledge in its entirety is illuminating reflection, which is precisely the meaning of wisdom. That this expedient knowledge is also the meaning of real knowledge means: real knowledge fundamentally takes the meaning of being non-delusive and accurately discerning; this expedient knowledge of mine is also truly existent, and since it is truly existent, expedient knowledge is itself the real meaning. Again, as for saying that real knowledge is itself expedient knowledge: skilful means takes dexterity as its meaning; this real knowledge expounds the principle of one cause and one fruition, declaring the profound, wonderful, subtle, and hard-to-know principle under heaven. The sūtra text below praises real knowledge, saying: 'The wisdom of the Buddhas is extremely profound and measureless.' This one cause and one fruition is the object illuminated by real knowledge. Looking vertically into this object, it is bottomless, which is 'extremely profound'; examining it horizontally, it is limitless, which is 'measureless.' That real knowledge can illuminate such a profound, vast, and hard-to-know principle is precisely the meaning of dexterity, which is skilful means.
