The question is asked: "Although he resorts to words to praise the two knowledges, clarifying that these two knowledges are not what common sentiments can fathom, nor what clumsy words can reach, he for the time being stops this proclamation; hence the text below says: 'Only the Buddhas can know it,' which is beyond the reach of lesser sages. In resorting to the beyond-words, could he also produce doubts in the great assembly and start the stirring of attachments? The assembly at that time said: 'For what reason did the Tathāgata, arising from samādhi, praise his own two knowledges as profoundly deep? Yet he ceases—for what reason?' Therefore it is said that praising the skilful knowledge is the starting point for stirring attachments, and praising the real knowledge is the starting point for generating doubt." The questioner asks: "Since you say it is beyond words, why does he still speak and praise it?" The commentator says: "If he remained silent and did not speak of the beyond-words, how could the assembly at that time know that these two knowledges should be beyond words?"
