From 'At that time the World-Honoured One spoke in verse' below: in the correct exposition by dharma there were originally two parts, prose and verse. What follows is the second, the verse, totaling one hundred and fourteen verse lines, which verses the above. In the above prose there were originally two parts: first, the causal arising; second, the correct exposition by dharma, opening the gate of skilful means and revealing the true mark. Now the one hundred and fourteen verse lines are also divided into two sections: first, there are four lines and one phrase of verse that verse the first, causal arising, in the prose above; second, the remaining one hundred and nine lines and three phrases of verse that verse the second, correct exposition by dharma, in the prose above. However, within the causal arising above there were originally two: first, the Buddha granting that he would speak of the meaning of converging on the same [end]; second, Śāriputra receiving the Buddha's clear intent. Now, the four lines and one phrase only verse the Buddha granting [it], and do not verse Śāriputra receiving the intent. Yet within the Buddha granting [it] above there were originally four layers: first, directly granting to speak; second, admonition; third, selecting the assembly; now none of these are versed, and it only verses the fourth, praising the assembly and concluding with admonition and granting.
