Question: 'Above it said that if people encounter suffering they become weary of old age, sickness, and death; why does it now say that they are greedily attached to birth and death? This is mutually contradictory between before and after.' An explanation says there are three interpretations: One interpretation says: birth and death are of two kinds: first, the fragmentary birth and death within the three realms; second, the transformed birth and death of the ground of ignorance beyond the three realms. The suffering of fragmentary [birth and death] is intensely pressing, so the weary mind is manifest; compared to fragmentary [birth and death], this suffering of transformed [birth and death] is subtle. Furthermore, the former three-vehicle teaching did not speak of the suffering of the ground of ignorance; since the former teaching did not speak of the suffering of this birth and death, toward this suffering they had no weary mind, and hence it is called greedy attachment. The second interpretation says: formerly when they were beginning as srotāpannas and the like, if discussed in terms of seeking the path, they encountered suffering and were weary of old age, sickness, and death, yet still had love for wife and children; this, then, is greedy attachment to birth and death. Use these two interpretations as one pleases. Later it also says: within the capacity there is weariness, yet in affection there is greed.
