Now, within the two sections, each divides into three. Within the request there are three parts: as he intends to request the Buddha to repeat the explanation of the meaning of opening the three and revealing the One on behalf of people of middling capacity, therefore, first, he begins by setting forth his own understanding; it is precisely through his own understanding of the principle of identical return that he has received the prophecy of bodhi. Second, he immediately mentions the group of those who have not yet understood. From "these twelve hundred" onwards is the third part: concluding the request. The second part clarifies that among these trainees who have not yet understood, how could there be merely twelve hundred people? Here he only adduces these as the opening of the request. "Free from the view of self" refers precisely to the view of individuality. "And the views of existence and non-existence" refers to the two views of annihilationism and eternalism. "And so forth" refers to the attachment to views and attachment to rules and vows. When all these people heard the Buddha open the three and reveal the One, they mutually confused teaching by principle and confused principle by teaching, doubting whether what they had attained was right or wrong; hence it says "all have fallen into doubt and confusion." From "O World-Honoured One, how wonderful! We pray that for the sake of the fourfold assembly you will explain its causes and conditions, so that they may be freed from doubt and regret" is the third part, concluding the request.
