"When I first heard what the Buddha preached": the six and a half verses from here on are the third [section], setting forth the meaning afresh without versifying the prose above. How is this known? The prose clarifies that there was doubt in the past, but does not clarify the elimination of new doubts today; the "Expedient Means" chapter above clarifies that expedient wisdom is difficult to fathom and real wisdom is extremely profound, and also says, "The Buddha, by the power of skilful means, indicates the teachings of the three vehicles." By relying on this, a mind of doubt and perplexity arose; only upon hearing the extensive explanation above that opens the three and reveals the one was this doubt eliminated. Within these six and a half verses, there are themselves two parts: now, the one verse from "When I first heard what the Buddha preached, my mind was not startled or doubtful" on first sets forth the mind of doubt and perplexity; second, from "The Buddha, by diverse conditions" on, five and a half verses extensively clarify the elimination of doubt. Now within these five and a half verses, there are themselves three stages: the first verse directly and generally clarifies the elimination of doubt; second, from "The Buddha spoke of the past, of immeasurable extinct Buddhas" on, three verses cite the Buddhas of the three periods as all putting the three first and the one after, specifically setting forth the teaching that eliminates doubt; third, from "The World-Honoured One preaches the real path" on, one and a half verses summarize and conclude the elimination of doubt.
