From "Yet now this place" downwards, there are two verses, which versify the application of the third parable above, of being unable to rescue the sons. But in the opening of the parable above, there were originally two sections of admonition and exhortation, each also having three [parts]; when it came to the application of the parable, it was divided into three sections: repeatedly applying the tentative adaptation of admonition and exhortation, repeatedly applying the lack of capacity in both parties, and repeatedly applying the cessation of teaching in both parties. Now these two verses only versify the application regarding the admonition side; but within admonition there were originally three parts, and now here it omits and does not versify the application of the cessation of teaching in admonition, only versifying the application of the tentative adaptation and the lack of capacity in admonition. Now, "Yet now this place has many perils and distresses, I alone am able to rescue and protect"—this single verse directly versifies the application of the tentative adaptation of admonition, where it said above, "When the Buddha saw this, he thought: 'I am the father of sentient beings; I should rescue them from their suffering and distress.'" "Although I instruct them, they do not believe or accept"—this single verse versifies the application of the above lack of capacity under admonition, corresponding to the above passage "If I merely by supernatural power..." Here, saying "Although I instruct them, they do not believe or accept" reveals their lack of capacity: if he reached them with supernatural power, they would not believe or accept. Below it then explains: "Because of their deep greed and attachment to the defilements of desires."
