The nineteen lines following “If there are sharp faculties” are the second [section], broadly explaining that one should preach for good people, which expands upon the four lines of the first [section] above that briefly explained that one should preach for good people. Within this there are two [parts]: the first consists of seventeen lines of verse directly explaining that one should preach for good people; the second, the two lines following “Moreover, Śāriputra, as I explain these characteristics”, generally concludes by encouraging that one should preach for good people. Within the preceding seventeen lines of verse, there are altogether ten kinds [of qualities before] one may preach [for someone]; now, contrasting them according to their meaning, they constitute five pairs: The first pair explains that in the present they are bright, intelligent, and of sharp wisdom, and in the past they have deeply planted merit; this is the pairing of merit and wisdom. The second pair speaks of looking downward with compassion for those in lower conditions, and looking upward with reverence for elders and teachers; this is the pairing of looking down and looking up. The third pair speaks of externally relinquishing and distancing oneself from evil conditions, and internally upholding the precepts purely; this is the pairing of external and internal. The fourth pair speaks of being upright and gentle in one’s own practice, and expounding the Dharma purely in transforming others; this is the pairing of self-cultivation and transforming others. The fifth pair speaks of, at the outset, being single-mindedly intent on seeking the sūtra, and in the end upholding it with a pure heart upon the crown of the head; this is the pairing of beginning and end. The two lines following “Told Śāriputra: ‘As I explain these characteristics’” are the second [part], generally concluding by encouraging that one should preach for good people.
