問者又言：「汝若使菩薩有增長之義以譬二木者，我聲聞亦有增長之義以譬藥草，不言不知之義以譬藥草也。」解者復言：「此品本為述成四大聲聞，今日得解先噵其昔日不解，故以草為譬。噵其稟澤不知，故聲聞等存不知之邊，菩薩存增長之邊。」

The questioner asks again: “If you make the bodhisattva have the meaning of growth to serve as the parable for the two trees, my śrāvakas also have the meaning of growth to serve as the parable for the medicinal herbs, not using the meaning of ignorance to serve as the parable for the medicinal herbs.” The commentator explains again: “This chapter originally aimed to relate the four great śrāvakas' attainment of understanding today by first speaking of their past failure to understand; hence it uses the grass as a parable. In speaking of receiving moisture without knowing, the śrāvakas and others retain the aspect of not knowing, while the bodhisattvas retain the aspect of growth.”
