「爾時千二百阿羅漢」此下品中第二明諸聲聞授記事。就此中自有二段：第一為諸聲聞授記；第二「爾時五百羅漢於佛前」以下明得記人領解也。就正授記中自有二：第一別為授記，第二一行半偈總為諸聲聞授記。就第一別授記中有二，即是長行與偈為兩。就長行中自有二：第一先為千二百人授記，第二「其五百阿羅漢」以下為五百人授記也。就初段中有二：一者是千二百人請記，二者「言佛知此等」下正記千二百人。就請記中有二：一者經家敘，第二正明請記。但千二百人中正舉憍陳如為端也。其五百羅漢是第二為五百羅漢授記。

From "At that time the twelve hundred arhats" below, this is the second [section] within the chapter, clarifying the matter of the bestowal of prophecy on the various voice-hearers. Within this there are intrinsically two sections: first, bestowing prophecy on the various voice-hearers; second, from "At that time the five hundred arhats in the presence of the Buddha" below, clarifying the understanding expressed by those who received prophecy. Within directly bestowing prophecy there are intrinsically two: first, individually bestowing prophecy; second, one and a half lines of verse collectively bestowing prophecy on the various voice-hearers. Within the first, individually bestowing prophecy, there are two, which are prose and verse as two. Within the prose there are intrinsically two: first, bestowing prophecy on the twelve hundred people; second, from "these five hundred arhats" below, bestowing prophecy on the five hundred people. Within the first section there are two: first, the twelve hundred people requesting prophecy; second, from "The Buddha, knowing these [people]" below, directly prophesying the twelve hundred people. Within requesting prophecy there are two: first, the compiler of the sūtra's narration; second, directly clarifying the request for prophecy. However, among the twelve hundred people, he directly singles out Kauṇḍinya as the foremost. "These five hundred arhats" is the second, bestowing prophecy on the five hundred arhats.
