'And spoke in verse' downward has nineteen and a half lines, which is the second section of the chapter, repeating in verse the prose. In the prose above there were five stages; now it does not versify the first, the adducing of right and wrong. Now, the first one and a half lines first versify the second, the origin of the event; from 'after this Buddha passed into extinction' downward, fourteen lines versify the third above, the past event; next are two lines, versifying the fourth above, the praise of the sūtra; next are two lines, versifying the fifth above, the encouragement and exhortation. The third section above originally had two parts: first, clarifying the two causes—the practice of good and evil; next, clarifying the two fruitions—the attainment of good and evil. Now, among the fourteen lines, four lines versify the practice of causes, and ten lines versify the attainment of fruitions. Within the clarification of practicing causes above there were six stages, but here only three kinds are versified: the initial three lines first versify the practice of good causes; next, the half line beginning 'all the people having heard' versifies the practice of evil causes; the half line downward from 'Bodhisattva Sadāparibhūta' versifies the good cause. 'Their sins having been exhausted' downward, ten lines, versifies the attainment of fruitions, also divided into two: first, five lines versify the good fruition; next, five lines versify the evil fruition. Within the good fruition above there were originally two: first, properly clarifying the good fruition; second, the synthesis. Now four and a half lines versify the fruition, and a half line versifies the synthesis. Within the proper clarification of fruition above there were originally six, but here only three are versified: the first, the second, and the third. From 'at that time the fourfold assembly' downward clarifies evil persons attaining the fruition. In the prose above there were originally two: first, properly clarifying the attainment of the fruition; second, the synthesis. Now one and a half lines versify the attainment of the fruition, and three and a half lines versify the synthesis. In the attainment of fruition above there were originally three, but here it only versifies the [third]. From 'for kotis of myriads of kalpas' downward, two lines versify the fourth section in the prose, praising the sūtra. From 'therefore practitioners...' downward, two lines versify the fifth section in the prose, encouraging and exhorting receptive upholding.
