"Among the bodhisattvas, honestly discarding skilful means, I preach only the unsurpassed Path"—these three lines are the eighth [section]. Here this is designated as the Buddha preaching the Great Vehicle for sentient beings, which is to preach the Lotus Sūtra. 'Discarding' means setting aside the expedient teachings of former days; 'preaching only the unsurpassed Path' means adopting the teaching of the Great Vehicle of today. This serves as the basis for the eighth parable below in the burning house, where the elder gives the great carts equally; it corresponds to the passage below stating, "At that time the elder bestowed on each of the sons equally a great cart…" "When the bodhisattvas hear this Dharma, their nets of doubts are all eliminated"—this one verse is the eighth within the five turbidities, and the ninth among the ten expositions by dharma. Here it is designated as the persons of the three vehicles together discarding the teachings of the three vehicles and attaining understanding of the Great Vehicle; it serves as the basis for the ninth parable below in the burning house, where the sons rejoice because they obtain the great carts, corresponding to the passage below stating, "At that time the sons each rode on the great cart, attaining what they had never had before, and leapt with joy." The verses on the five turbidities are concluded.
