"Suppose there is a [frightful way] of five hundred yojanas"—from this point downward is the second part, the exposition by parable. Within this exposition by parable there are also three sections: first, unfolding of the parable; second, application of the parable; third, citing an external parable to correspond and conclude. Within the unfolding of the parable there are five parables, which illustrate the five kinds of basis in the exposition by dharma above: first, explaining the parable of guiding; second, the parable of flagging and turning back; third, the parable of conjuring the transformed city; fourth, the parable of knowing to rest; fifth, the parable of leading to the jewel place.
