《賢劫經》云：「從佛初發心去，乃至分舍利，凡三百五十法門，一一門各有六度，合二千一百度。用是度，對破四分煩惱，合成八千四百。約一變為十，合八萬四千也。」若作八萬四千法藏名，是世界悉檀攝。若作八萬四千塵勞門名，為人悉檀攝；八萬四千三昧、八萬四千陀羅尼門，亦如是。若作八萬四千對治、八萬四千空門，對治悉檀攝。若作八萬四千諸波羅蜜、八萬四千度無極，第一義悉檀攝。

The *Bhadrakalpika-sūtra* says: "From the Buddha's first resolve of the mind up to the distribution of the relics, there are altogether three hundred and fifty dharma gates; each single gate has the six perfections, totaling two thousand one hundred perfections. Using these perfections to counteract and destroy the four divisions of afflictions makes eight thousand four hundred. By multiplying each by ten, they total eighty-four thousand." If taken as the name "eighty-four thousand dharma treasuries," it is encompassed by the worldly siddhānta. If taken as the name "eighty-four thousand gates of affliction," it is encompassed by the siddhānta for the sake of the person; the eighty-four thousand samādhis and eighty-four thousand dhāraṇī gates are also like this. If taken as the eighty-four thousand antidotes and eighty-four thousand gates of emptiness, they are encompassed by the antidotal siddhānta. If taken as the eighty-four thousand pāramitās and eighty-four thousand boundless crossings, they are encompassed by the paramārtha-siddhānta.
