初、釋名通論事、理，顯體專論理，宗、用但論事，教相分別事、理。釋名通說教行，顯體非教、非行，宗、用但行，教相但教。釋名通說因果，顯體非因、非果，宗自因果，用教他因果，教相分別上法耳。釋名通論自行、化他，體非自、非他，宗是自行，用是化他，教相分別自、他。釋名通論說默，體非說、非默，宗默、用說，教相分別（云云）。

First, explaining the title generally discusses phenomena and principle; discerning the substance exclusively discusses principle; the central purport and function discuss only phenomena; the characteristics of the teaching distinguish phenomena and principle. Explaining the title generally expounds teaching and practice; discerning the substance is neither teaching nor practice; the central purport and function are practice alone; the characteristics of the teaching are teaching alone. Explaining the title generally expounds cause and fruit; discerning the substance is neither cause nor fruit; the central purport is one's own cause and fruit; function teaches cause and fruit to others; the characteristics of the teaching merely distinguish the above phenomena. Explaining the title generally discusses self-practice and transforming others; the substance is neither self nor other; the central purport is self-practice; function is transforming others; the characteristics of the teaching distinguish self and other. Explaining the title generally discusses speech and silence; the substance is neither speech nor silence; the central purport is silence; function is speech; the characteristics of the teaching distinguish them (and so forth).
