There is a case where one person receives one flavor: as in the Avataṃsaka, those of pure and unified capacity immediately obtain clarified butter without passing through the five flavors. The Great Sūtra says: 'In the Snowy Mountains there is a grass; if cattle eat it, they immediately produce clarified butter.' There is a case where one person passes through the five flavors: as for those of the Small Vehicle capacity, in the sudden [teaching] it is like milk, in the Tripiṭaka it is like curd, and only upon reaching clarified butter is it finally ultimate. As the Great Sūtra says: 'From the cow comes milk, up to from butter comes clarified butter.' There are also bodhisattvas of keen capacity and śrāvakas who have not entered the ranks who perhaps see the nature within the Tripiṭaka, which is passing through two flavors. There are those who see the nature in the Vaipulya, which is passing through three flavors. Those who see the nature in Prajñā pass through four flavors, such as the three hundred bhikṣus. The Great Sūtra says: 'If poison is placed in milk, throughout all five flavors it can kill anyone.' This is precisely the meaning.
