How are the present four teachings integrated and reconciled with Dharma[kṣema's] two piṭakas? He himself said that summarizing them in brief, there are only two kinds. Now we unpack and divide them, classifying them into four teachings: the śrāvaka-piṭaka is the tripiṭaka teaching; the bodhisattva-piṭaka is the shared, distinctive, and perfect teachings. For determined śrāvakas, the tripiṭaka teaching is spoken; for śrāvakas who regressed from the great, the shared teaching is spoken; for gradually awakening bodhisattvas, the distinctive teaching is spoken; for suddenly awakening bodhisattvas, the perfect teaching is spoken. Not only are the terms and numbers easily integrated, but their doctrinal purport aligns profoundly; past and present tally together, being one without duality. It is only that his text was brief while its meaning was broad, and his teaching was one yet encompassed the others. If one is to unfold what is hidden to make it manifest, one must construct many theoretical arguments. Just as in hunting and fishing in rivers and marshes one knits abundant fish traps and snares—how could it be that fishermen and hunters love expansiveness? It is only out of necessity that they are expansive.
