二、約觀門明義者，一、圓頓觀，從初發心即觀實相，修四種三昧，行八正道，即於道場開佛知見，得無生忍。如牛食忍草，即得醍醐，其意具在《止觀》（云云）。

Second, clarifying the meaning in terms of the contemplation gate: first, the perfect-sudden contemplation: from the initial arising of the aspiration [for awakening], one directly contemplates the real mark, cultivates the four kinds of samādhi, and practices the Eightfold Noble Path, whereupon directly in the place of awakening one opens the Buddha's knowledge and vision and attains the forbearance of non-arising. Just as a cow eating forbearance grass immediately produces ghee, its meaning is fully contained in the Great Calming and Contemplation, and so forth.
