With such initial sudden [teachings], he did not necessarily teach exclusively the bodhisattvas of the dharma-kāya; there were also ordinary beings of great capacity. Thus there are two meanings: those who directly awaken to its essence as round and sudden belong to ghee; for those of initial mind, although they hear the great teaching, they only enter the ten faiths, which is the very first flavor; since the initial can give rise to what follows, it is again like milk. Why? Although it is called sudden, whether vehicle and precepts are both urgent, or precepts are relaxed while the vehicle is urgent, being born by such karma, they cannot arrive of their own accord; they must be born in response to be led into the seven locations and eight assemblies. When great capacities stimulate the Buddha, it is compared to the forbearance grass; the perfect response and sudden preaching is compared to producing ghee. Furthermore, at the very beginning of the sudden teaching, when one first enters the inner ordinary stage, it is still called milk. It is called milk not with the intent of blandness, but because it is the initial and fundamental. Just as when a cow newly gives birth, blood transforms into milk, purely present in the body, and if the calf suckles, the cow yields milk: the Buddha is also like this; first sitting at the place of awakening and newly attaining correct awakening, the blood of ignorance and so forth transforms into clarity, and the eighty thousand treasuries of Dharma and twelve divisions of scriptures are fully present in the dharma-kāya; the calves of great capacity are the first to stimulate and receive milk. Since milk is the first of all flavors, it illustrates that the sudden is at the head of all teachings; therefore, the Avataṃsaka is considered milk. When distinguishing according to the three teachings, it is called the sudden teaching, and is also ghee; when distinguishing according to the five flavors, it is called the milk teaching.
