Furthermore, speaking of the flavor of cooked butter: [the son] was ordered to turn and transmit the teaching, taking charge of and knowing the various goods, so that his mind gradually became open and at ease. Knowing of himself that a firefly's light cannot match the light of the sun, his feelings of reverent submission matured all the more—just as from raw butter one turns into cooked butter. Moreover, explaining that 'after the Prajñā, the Avataṃsaka sea-like emptiness is clarified' means the perfect and sudden teaching of the Lotus Sūtra. Why is this? When [the Buddha] first attained the Way, he expounded purely the perfect and sudden [teaching], but for those who did not understand, their spiritual capacity for the great had not yet deepened. Through the Tripiṭaka, the Vaipulya, and the Prajñā, they were refined and mellowed, their faculties became sharp, and their obstructions were eliminated, so that they were capable of hearing the perfect and sudden. He then expounded the Lotus Sūtra, opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision, enabling them to enter the dharma realm, on par with the Avataṃsaka—this is the entering spoken of in the *Faxing lun*. Therefore the text below says: 'At the outset, beholding my body... they entered the Tathāgata's wisdom.' Now, hearing this sūtra, they enter into the Buddha's wisdom; the Buddha's wisdom at the beginning and at the end are equal in their perfect and sudden meaning. Therefore, following the Prajñā, the Avataṃsaka sea-like emptiness is expounded, which is on par with the Lotus Sūtra, and is also the teaching of the fifth period.
