The four kinds of four truths are: 1. arising and ceasing, 2. non-arising and non-ceasing, 3. immeasurable, and 4. unconstructed. Their meaning comes from the "Chapter on Noble Conduct" in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, dividing into the distinctions of the four kinds based on partial, perfect, phenomenal, and principle. That which is called "arising and ceasing" receives its name from phenomena because delusion regarding the real is heavy. However, suffering and accumulation are one phenomenon, divided into two as cause and effect; path and cessation are likewise. A verse in the Saṃyuktābhidharmahṛdaya states: "The nature of results among conditioned forces is called the truth of suffering. The nature of causes is called the truth of accumulation. The ultimate cessation of all defiled phenomena is called the truth of cessation. All undefiled practices are called the truth of the path." The Great Sūtra states: "The heavy burden of the aggregates and sense bases, which oppresses and binds, is the truth of suffering. The afflictions of views and craving, which can bring about future fruits, are the truth of accumulation. Morality, concentration, wisdom, impermanence, suffering, and emptiness, which can eradicate the root of suffering, are the truth of the path. The severance of the fetters of results and seeds in the twenty-five states of existence is the truth of cessation." The Bequeathed Teaching states: "Accumulation is truly the cause; there is no other cause. The path to the cessation of suffering is truly the true path." All of these clarify the marks of the four noble truths of arising and ceasing.
