初明四趣十法：如是相者，即是惡相，表墮不如意處。譬人未禍，否色已彰，相師覽別，能記凶衰。惡相若起，遠表泥黎，凡夫不知，二乘髣髴知，菩薩知不深，佛知盡邊。如善相師，洞見始終，故言如是相也。

First is clarifying the ten dharmas of the four destinies. 'Such appearance' is an evil appearance, indicating a fall into an undesirable place. For example, before misfortune befalls a person, an ominous complexion is already manifest; a physiognomist observes and distinguishes it, able to predict disaster and decline. When an evil appearance arises, it remotely indicates Naraka; ordinary beings do not know it, the two vehicles know it vaguely, bodhisattvas know it not deeply, and the Buddha knows its utmost limit. Just like an expert physiognomist who thoroughly sees from beginning to end, it is therefore called 'such appearance'.
