First, the stage of dry wisdom: the beginning for the three vehicles is equally called dry wisdom, which is embodying phenomena, the five meditations for stilling the mind, and the contemplations of the specific marks and general marks of the four stations of mindfulness. In phenomenal characteristics it does not differ from the tripiṭaka [teaching]. These three tiers of Dharma gates embody the aggregates, sense bases, and elements as being like an illusion and like a transformation, comprehensively overturning the eight inversions of view and attachment; this is called the station of mindfulness of the body. Sensation, mind, and phenomena are also like this. Abiding in this contemplation, one cultivates the correct exertions, bases of psychic power, faculties, powers, factors of awakening, and path [factors]. Although one has not yet attained the water of the principle resembling the dharma of heat, their wisdom of general marks is deep and sharp; hence it is called the stage of dry wisdom.
