The names of the eight liberations are (and so forth). Turning one's back on the pure five desires and casting off the clinging mind, they are thus called "liberations." As for cultivation: the practitioner upholds pure precepts and gives rise to a great vow, desiring to accomplish the great matter. With upright body and right mind, one attentively contemplates the big toe of the foot, imagining it to be like a large bean, black, swollen, and raised. When this notion is accomplished, one proceeds further, making it the size of a cat-bean; further, the size of a finger; further, the size of a chicken egg. Next, the second toe, third, fourth, and fifth toes. Next, one contemplates the sole of the foot, the heel, ankle, calf, knee, thigh, and hip, seeing them all bloated and swollen. Next, one contemplates the right leg, which is also like this. Furthermore, one should imagine the passages of feces and urine, the waist, spine, abdomen, back, chest, and ribs, seeing them all swollen. One also contemplates the right shoulder-blade, arm, elbow, wrist, palm, and five fingers, as well as the head, jaw, and so forth. From feet to head, from head to feet, scanning along the body, one sees only swelling and bloating, and disgust arises in the mind. Furthermore, one should contemplate breakdown and putrefaction: from the passages of feces and urine, worms and pus flow out, reeking worse than a dead dog. As it is with one's own body, so one contemplates the person one loves. Inwardly it shatters the view of self; outwardly it shatters craving. Dwelling long in this contemplation, one eliminates mundane craving.
