Therefore, although the persons of the three vehicles all contemplate the two truths, their function and application are different. While the two vehicles contemplate the two truths, they exclusively understand the provisional to enter emptiness, using the real to sever fetters until reaching the fruit of non-study. The bodhisattva also contemplates the two truths: starting from dry wisdom and ending with the stage of seeing, they mostly use entering emptiness from the provisional, attaining all-knowledge and the wisdom eye, mostly employing the real; from the stage of attenuation they train in roaming freely with spiritual penetrations, mostly cultivating the contemplation of entering the provisional from emptiness, attaining knowledge of the paths and modes and the Dharma eye, mostly employing the conventional; from the stage of the pratyekabuddha they train in the dual illumination of both contemplations, enter the bodhisattva stage, and naturally flow into the ocean of sarvajñatā. This is effortlessly cultivating knowledge of the modes and the buddha eye; at the Buddha stage, perfect and luminous, they accomplish the knowledge of all modes and the buddha eye, equally illuminating the two truths completely. Therefore, the Da zhidu lun says: "In the śrāvaka Dharma it is named the stage of dry wisdom; for the bodhisattva it is the patience of subduing. In the śrāvaka Dharma it is named the stage of nature; in the bodhisattva Dharma it is the patience of pliable accord. In the śrāvaka Dharma it is named the stage of the eight types of persons; for the bodhisattva it is named the path of the patience of the unproduced. In the śrāvaka Dharma it is named the stage of seeing; in the bodhisattva Dharma it is the fruit of the patience of the unproduced Dharma. In the śrāvaka [Dharma] it is named the stage of attenuation; in the bodhisattva Dharma it is named roaming freely with the five spiritual penetrations. In the śrāvaka Dharma it is named the stage of detachment from desire; in the bodhisattva Dharma it is named the purity of detachment from desire." The stage of the arhat in the śrāvaka Dharma is itself the Buddha stage. Why? For the Buddha of the tripiṭaka [teaching], manifesting the real with thirty-four mental moments, the complete severance of the fetters of the three realms is equal to that of an arhat; hence it is named the Buddha stage. In the bodhisattva Dharma it is still called the patience of the unproduced, as the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā says: "Whether the knowledge or the severance of the arhat, it is the bodhisattva's patience of the unproduced Dharma." The stage of the pratyekabuddha is also like this.
