別、圓各逗一種根性，故用發真為初焰。通教為逗多種根性，所謂別、圓入通故，含容取乾慧耳。若鈍者，八人、見地是初焰；利者，於乾慧即能斷結，故是初焰。

The distinctive and perfect [teachings] each address a single kind of spiritual root; hence they use manifesting the real as the initial flame. The shared teaching addresses multiple kinds of spiritual roots—namely because the distinctive and perfect enter the shared—and so broadly encompasses taking dry wisdom. For the dull, the eight types of persons and the stage of seeing are the initial flame; for the sharp, they can already sever fetters at dry wisdom, and therefore that is the initial flame.
